Arrowroot flour is a nutritious food, obtained from the fleshy rootstock of a tropical American plant. Arrowroot powder is an excellent thickening agent in many recipes. It is well-suited for infants or convalescents because it is easily digested.

  • Arrowroot is a food, and thus we keep it in the kitchen. We add it to many food recipes (hot cereals, sauces, gravies, meat dishes, vegetable dishes, stir-fry, baby food and formulas, waffles and pancakes, ice cream, etc.).
  • It's excellent as a thickener that adds nutrition to your recipes, rather than cornstarch which is highly processed.
  • It can be used to benefit anyone: men, women (including before, during or after pregnancy, and nursing) and children.

Arrowroot vs. tapioca flour

I find that arrowroot powder is much more expensive than tapioca flour. Can the two be used interchangeably in recipes?

Arrowroot Cookies and Milk

I just made arrowroot/wheat flour cookies, using honey for the sweetener, and they were excellent, with a taste that was faintly reminiscent of powdered sugar. I was wondering how I can use it to thicken milk for recipes that call for condensed milk. Could it even substitute for milk if just a small amount was called for?

    Hello, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to substitute milk however to thicken milk would be a great idea!

    Yes you can use this in gravy. You may have to use a little more Arrowroot than you normally would cornstarch but you can definitely do that instead. Thanks!

I combine brown rice flour (2 c.) with tapioca starch (sometimes called tapioca flour) (1 c.) to make my own GF all-purpose flour. Is this arrowroot /tapioca the same as what I buy (Bob's Red Mill Tapioca Starch/Flour)?

    Our Arrowroot Powder is made from the same plant as Red Mill's Tapioca Flour, therefore I would assume that you could use it the same way you use that product. Thanks!

dry shampoo

I use this stuff most often as a dry shampoo. It works really well! I am a busy mama with long hair and often don't like to wash my hair as frequently as the roots start to get oily. A tiny bit of arrowroot on a large blush brush works wonders to tidy up oily areas on my head. Very little powder is needed, plus the result is far lighter than other dry shampoos I have tried. Baking soda may be a popular and even less expensive choice for dry shampoos, but I have found that over time it alters the pH of the scalp and leads to itchiness and dry patches, and is best balanced with a wet rinse of apple cider vinegar for this reason - but then it's not a dry shampoo! I've not had this pH problem with arrowroot at all. As a dark blonde, arrowroot blends in nicely with my hair color. Brunettes may want to mix in a small amount of natural cocoa powder to darken the dry shampoo and avoid experiencing a grey-too-soon look in their roots.

Pepper aftertaste?

I recently increased the portion amount of Arrowroot starch in my homemade gluten free baking mix. I am noticing a peppery aftertaste to my baked goods and my daughter said it could be from using a large amount of arrowroot powder. Have you ever experienced this?

    Arrowroot Powder is flavorless so the peppery taste should not be because of the extra arrow root your using.

    It has about as many carbs as Cornstarch, which has 7 grams of carb per tablespoon. But Arrowroot is better because it's natural and not processed.

thickener for cold foods..

Can this be used to thicken foods that are not heated, as in cold puddings, shakes, jellos and so on? Also,would it have carbs in it? I'm looking for something along the lines of Gluccomannon. Thought I'd try this if it works just as good!

Why do you have tapioca in parenthesis? They are two separate things? If it isn't tapioca why label it so?

    The Arrowroot powder does come from a different plant than the tapioca, however they are often both labeled the same and since our suppliers listed it as such, that is what we list it as. If you look up the latin name for our Arrowroot on Wikipedia, it will tell you the two plants that are sometimes called the same thing.

Baby Formula/Arrowroot

My comment is simply that, before my friend, Shanna, loaned me her copy of Nourishing Traditions, she asked that I write down Sally Falon's recipe for Milk-Based Formula, as Shanna has been unable to produce adequate milk for her eighth baby. Once I began reading the information in Nourishing Traditions, I realized that I need my own copy, and, praise God, he led me to find a BHS catalog with it in there. Now I'm in the process of ordering it, along with some of the suggested ingredients. Arrowroot is not one of the ingredients in any of the three formula recipes in N.T.

Infant Formula

Hi, I was wondering if Shoshanna has come up with a recipe for infant formula??? I am getting ready to have a baby in about 6 weeks and wanted to be prepared in case I needed it! I am planning on breastfeeding, but failed with my last baby.... I want to stay away from commercially made formula if at all possible!! Thanks!

I have used arrowroot powder instead of talcum powder for years to avoid the alleged aluminium in I am going to start cooking with it as I heard elsewhere it had a beneficial calcium content.

As a person who is allergic to corn and all of its products, I have used arrowroot for years in place of cornstarch and found it to make an excellent lemon meringue pie, in addition to gravies and sauces. I also mix it in when I make my own baking powder.

Hello, I just wanted to share how much I love this arrowroot powder. I use it in gravy and it is delicious! It has also saved my pumpkin pie! I accidentally added a whole can of evaporated milk, (which was a total of 12 oz.) when the recipe only asked for 5 oz. My pie filling seemed “runny” and useless. I decided to throw in a couple heaping TBLS. of the arrowroot powder, stirred it up and hoped for the best. It set perfectly and turned out delicious!
