Herbs: Barberry root bark - powder

Lain name: Berberis vulgaris

Excerpts from Nutritional Herbology

Barberry is a deciduous, spiny bush that grows to be 10 to 15 feet tall. It is native to Europe and has been naturalized in the Eastern half of the United States. It has spiny, holly-shape leaves, yellow flowers and dark red to black berries. The bark of the trunk and root is bitter tasting and is astringent. It contains alkaloids that provide a number of well established effects particularly in the digestive system. It contains the same type of alkaloids as goldenseal root and oregon grape root. Barberry is much less expensive than these other two plants and bark is much more renewable environmentally than are roots.

Barberry is noted in folk medicine as a cure for nearly every gastrointestinal ailment, lymphatics, urinary tract and respiratory infection. It has been used as a bitter tonic and antypyretic. Berberine, the primary alkaloid, is a potent antibiotic, astringent and antifungal. When taken for infections, it controls the overgrowth of candida albacans as well as functioning as a bactericide. This is a real advantage over conventional antibiotics. It also controls infectious diarrhea and increases the production of the digestive enzymes.

Barberry has a traditionally been used to treat infectious diarrhea, repiratory infections, poor appetite, fever, candidiasis and hemorrhages.

Dear ones: Thank you so much for providing the opportunity to buy books and herbs at reasonable prices, along with the good information you have provided on this website. Using the books you provided, I was able to make a salve for my 3 year-old daughter which actually tames an itchy, red, dry rash on her hands that has plagued her for two years. I used the information you provided, along with the information from the books I ordered from you, and then herbs from my garden and woods to make this "healthy skin salve" (that's what our family calls it - we've all become believers after each of us has benefited from it!). I have long been frustrated with her rashes and have found nothing over-the-counter to actually diminish it, and eliminate the pain and itching. I thank the Lord for you and for his healing plants!
