Buckthorn has been used as a laxative for the past 400 years. It originated in the Middle East, Western Asia and Europe, and was brought to the United States by the pioneers for use as a laxative. It has also been used in sunscreens. The 1, 8-dihydroxy-anthracenes found in buckthorn may assist in curing cancer.

Buckthorn is best used in capsule form. It can also be used as a tea or extract.

Warnings: Do not use if you have appendicitis, Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. If you are pregnant or nursing, it is best to consult a natural doctor or your physician before using. Not recommended for children under 12.
