The Berkey Light is made from shatter-resistant copolyester designed for use during travel and outdoor actvities. It’s perfect for environments where electricity, water pressure or treated water may not be available. It purifies treated and untreated raw water from such sources as streams, stagnant ponds and water supplies in foreign countries where regulations may be substandard. The system does not leach foul tasting plasticizers into your water and will not retain foul tastes and odors from waterborne contaminants. Its self-sterilizing and recleanable purification elements remove pathogenic bacteria, cysts and parasites as well as harmful chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, VOCs, organic solvents, radon 222, trihalomethanes and reduce nitrates, nitrites, sediment and unhealthy minerals such as lead and mercury.

We all know that clean drinking water is a part of the foundation to good physical health. Nothing can substitute for that.

Today, obtaining this whole-some drinking water may be harder than one might expect. Water may contain chlorine, lead, high levels of harmful bacteria, and other unwanted contaminants. Sometimes, these contaminants produce unpleasant tastes and odors, but often, they are undetectable by our senses. Even bottled water can contain these same contaminants, and can be expensive.

The Berkey Light is the most advanced passive water filter available. It removes pathogenic bacteria, cysts, chemicals including herbicides, pesticides, foul tastes and odors, and reduces heavy metals without removing the healthful and nutritional minerals your body needs!

Other filtration systems are inferior. Most do not remove pathogenic bacteria and many remove beneficial minerals from the water as well. In addition, the Berkey Light is powerful enough to filter raw, untreated water from sources like lakes, streams, rivers and ponds.

Contaminants are captured on and within the micro-porous filtering element and are separated from the water. Each durable and efficient self-sterilizing element can be cleaned with a toothbrush or scrub pad and will last for 4,000 gallons.

The unit is made of durable Lexan, the same material used to make bullet proof glass, which makes it rugged and lasting, yet its design is pleasing to the eye. Because it is transparent, there is no guesswork when refilling the system because the water level is always visible.

The elevated base allows the Berkey Light to be used directly on the ground or situated anywhere on a flat surface. The chambers and base join together so it is convenient to transport even while it is filtering water. Each unit holds 2.5 gallons and filters at the rate of 1 gallon per hour.

It comes packaged with two Black Berkey purifying elements and sets up in minutes. Simply screw in the filtering elements and spigot, snap the chambers and base together and you are ready to filter! These filters work by gravity, so electricity is not involved.

For those of you who only have city water available, this filter is a great way to get rid of the excess chemicals and dead bacteria found in your water as a result of the chemicals.

I have in my possession THE BERKEY LIGHT for which I could not be happier. I have used it now for a few months and the results are awesome. My son came over and he said yes to my offer for a cup of coffee using one of Star Bucks products. He recognized the more mellow drink that he so appreciated. Also, I have purposely tested the water once filterd for acid/alkaline levels. It turns out the water becomes more alkaline, which is so much better for your body. As you know disease loves to live in an acidic body. So thank you for this wonder product.

Does this help to remove any fluoride present in the water? Not sure if that is even possible...but though I would ask as we have city water and, ugh, I get so anxious about the mass amounts of fluoride they use!

To remove fluoride you should get the PF-2 Fluoride and Arsenic Reduction Elements.

How long do the filtering elements last, like how many gallons do they filter? Also, what is the replacement cost for the elements?

I've been looking at different water filtration systems, and I'm very interested in this one.

As of January 1, 2010, California restated it's laws concerning water purification, plumbing, drinking water, etc. The Berkey Filters fell under the water purification regulations, in which extensive, VERY costly tests had to be made at Berkey's expense. These tests do not guarantee unending certification, and may have to be continuously performed to insure certification. Berkey chose not to perform the testing. Hence, they are not available in California.

I absolutely LOVE my Berkie Light. I keep it next to the sink, so it is really easy to fill with pull out spigot. I like my water cold, so I always have a gallon in the fridge and some going through the purifier. We are a family of 5 (2 on the way). Water is our primary drink, and when we have company (which is often), we fill an extra glass gallon jug and keep it cold. I thought it might be bothersome to keep up with the filling process, and was concerned it would keep us stocked well enough, but with the see through container, learning a simple new habit and helpful family members, we're never without pure water. We used to take up so much space and money with bottled water, now we all have our own Rubbermaid bottles that have our name on them, we just refill and take care of our own bottles. It is a system that works wonderfully for us and saves us tons of money. We are also very excited to take our Berkey Light camping!

Actually I have a question. From your experience with this filter, will this size be able to provide a family of six enough water for drinking and cooking compared to the big berkey. Also what is the advantages having it clear compared to the metal ones. Thanks for your time.

Yes, the Berkey Light is more than adequate in providing water for a family of 6.

Concerning the clear see-through Berkey Light vs. the metal Big Berkey, the water levels in both chambers are always visible in the Berkey Light. You have to lift the top chamber of the Big Berkey to see the water level in the bottom chamber.

I live on a Greek island and there is such an abundance of herbs growing wild! However,I don't really know what they all do and how to best use them. Thanks for this fantastic site which I discovered through NGJ! I would like to give all mamas a healthy alternative to baby lotion.

Heat 2 cups of good quality olive oil with a handful of chamomile flowers (dried) and pour in a jar and allow to cool. Store in glass for future use. I use it on the children after their bath by massaging and they warm up in seconds! It also seems to help in healing cuts and abrasions.

Did you know that chamomile actually means apple of the ground in Greek (because of its apple-like smell)?
