Comfrey Leaf - cut,

Herbs: Comfrey leaf - cut, organic

Common Names: Comfrey, gum plant, bruisewort, knit bone, nipbone, knit back, boneset
Latin Name: Symphytum officinale
Origin: USA

Comfrey is high in calcium and vitamin C. It has a strong history of being used as an external application by itself or in poultices for the mending of wounds and broken bones. It is a contact healer, relieving pain and immediately helping to grow new flesh and bone. The Latin name itself translates "knitting together."

Excerpts from The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook

One of the main therapeutic substances in comfrey is allantoin, an anti-inflammatory that perks up the immune system, speeds wound healing, and encourages new skin and cell growth. It's a time-honored treatment for healing sores, bruises, and even broken bones. The tannins in comfrey are astringent, and the rosmarinic acid might contribute some anti-inflammatory assistance.

Precautions: Not recommended for internal use.

From Our Reading and/or Experience...

  • We use comfrey often in external applications. It is readily available fresh, probably in your own back yard. It is not recommended for internal use.
  • It can be used to benefit anyone: men, women (including before, during or after pregnancy, and nursing), children and animals.
  • It is critical that comfrey is stored in a dark, dry, and cool place. Refrigeration or freezing is highly recommended, but not necessary. Following these suggestions will delay the loss of it's highly valued nutritional and medicinal properties.

Please share comfrey recipe
by Stacey on May 7, 2013

Hello could you please share your comfrey recipe for muscles. I would like to make this as I have severe arthritis in my knees and the comfrey works wonders but hard to find

    Re: Please share comfrey recipe
by Bulk Herb Store on May 9, 2013

The only recipe we have for muscles with comfrey in it would be the Muscle Salve Mix and we do not offer that recipe to our customers. Sorry!! But you could infuse your own oil with just comfrey or add other herbs if you want, or you can try our Muscle Salve Mix or Arthritis Salve Mix.

Cure for SHIN SPLINTS!!!!
by Elizabeth on May 6, 2013

HI BHS!!!

I had originally bought some comfrey a while back for a friend who broke her arm. I gave her a bunch to make poultices. Unfortunately, she never did it. Not an herb believer like me! Well, I've recent taken up running, and my shins are killing me. Then I remembered the comfrey, and I thought it wouldn't hurt to make a poultice and apply it to my shins. SO, after a minute poultice on both shins I actually can run my fingers up and down my shins with slight pressure without immense pain!!!! They are still tender, but not NEARLY as much as before. Another miracle thanks to a simple little herb!!! THANKS, BHS!!!!

Comfrey root vs comfrey leaves
by Christine on May 6, 2013

Is using comfrey root the same as using comfrey leaves when making a salve? I have organic comfrey root but have read that it is better to use the leaves. Do you agree?

Re: Comfrey root vs comfrey leaves
by Bulk Herb Store on May 9, 2013

They do have the same properties according to what I have read about it, however it seems like the root has a higher level of pyrrolizidine alkaloids then the leaves and is therefore not recommended to use as much as the leaves, even in salves, because the pyrrolizidine alkaloids are toxic and may cause liver damage if taken internally. Comfrey again helping people
by Nilza on Feb 21, 2013

I have got this Confrey recipe in my country, Brazil where comfrey grows everywhere, it seems to stand any weather condition as far as I am concern. The recipe is simple and very effective for muscular pain. Everyone I have provided this recipe with has reported wonders, no pain, no pills from pharmacies, almost no cost at all for they are so cheap and you can grown it in your apartment in a vase where natural light reaches of course. It grows in no time too.
I will be happy to share this recipe on the Sharing Remedies on this site I see in my right side on the screen.

Comfrey root powder
by Manuela on Feb 8, 2013

I've read (but definitely needs more research), that comfrey root powder might fill in cavities naturally. So, I am assuming it might not be save for small children (due to swallowing of comfrey leaf in excess can cause damage). I am just wondering if you have heard anything about this. I will research more but if you already know some more about this I would be glad to know your sources. If not, I will let you know once I find out more.

Blessings,
Manuela

Miracle herb!!!
by Mindy Brasher on Jun 21, 2012

Dear BHS, I am writing to let you know what a miracle the comfrey poultice was for our son. In the Fall of 2011 our 13 year old son had a motor bike accident and landed full force on his left shoulder. He suffered a dramatic collar bone/clavicle break. So bad that you could put your finger in between the separated bones. His orthopedist gave us an 8 week window, and maybe a little more, of healing for such a severe break. I immediately found my BHS Catalog and then called the store to find out the best thing to heal this broken bone and fast. Comfrey. I ordered it and of course it came to us quickly. I applied the poultice compresses 2 times a day. The doctor was surprised a week and a half later at how quickly the bone was mending. By the second/ third week we saw major improvement in how much bone had grown. By four weeks my son was released from the doctor to go about his regular activities including playing on his tennis team. 4 Weeks! Bone Knit is a perfect name for this miracle herb. Thank you for making it available to us. We will be sharing the wisdom we have gleaned with all whom will listen.

Helped with Eye Injury
by Ami on Oct 13, 2009

My husband was hit in the eye with a chunk of firewood this week. It caused an abrasion over 90% of his eye and they had to scrape the tore up surface off his cornea. And of course his eyelids down to his cheekbone were very swollen and black and blue. Day 2 I started comfrey leaf poultices and now at day 5 he has only a tiny bruise, no swelling and almost no redness in the eyeball. His vision is even coming back well. There was concern that it may cause some blindness due to the severity of the injury. We are so thankful for the herbs God has given us to use!

Heals Bruising
by Michelle C. on Aug 24, 2009

Three weeks ago, I fell and broke my left arm in two places. One break is low, near my elbow. The other is high, in the area of my shoulder.

I began using the Comfrey and aloe on the area. WOW!! The bruising started healing in 24 hours. I couldn't see some bruising on and below my elbow, so it didn't receive the treatment. It is still very purple. Two days ago, I started treating it and I am amazed at the improvement. Besides healing the bruised areas, I have been in little to no pain. The Dr. cannot believe how quickly I am healing. Thank you!!!

Comfrey
by Nickie on Nov 8, 2006

My husband recently tore a ligament in his knee. The ligament was completely severed. I made a poultice from the dried comfrey leaves and applied it nightly to the injured knee. The pain quickly left and the "looseness" that came from the ligament being torn slowly went away. His bad knee is feeling better than his good one! I also followed your recipe for muscle rubs using the comfrey and have experienced wonderful results. For example- I applied it to my wrist that had been aching for days and in the morning there wasn't any pain. Thank you for offering your products at such a reasonable price, but more than that , thank you for such an excellent resource full of information on various herbs. Your web site has been a blessing!

Shoshanna,

Thanks so much for including your birth story. People need to hear about birth the way God designed it to be!! My husband and I actually visited the No Greater Joy offices the first weekend in August, but missed you because you were oh so with baby : )

So we were eager to hear the news. Bradley Childbirth is fantastic- I'm a doula and I've heard many "natural childbirth" perspectives, but I love how the Bradley method really encourages women to focus in on what their body is doing- and to give in to this process.

I liken it to trusting God- even when there is much pain/pressure!

So, we're sorry we missed meeting you but rejoice over Penelope Jane's birth!

Blessings, The Montmenys
