Diatomaceous Earth (Fossil Shell Flour)

Herbs: Diatomaceous Earth (Fossil Shell Flour)

Origin: USA

CAUTION: Do Not Breathe The Powder In While Using.

100% pure food grade Diatomaceous Earth from a fresh water source.

Diatomaceaous Earth

Also called Fossil Shell Flour, has many health benefits. Diatomaceous earth consists of diatoms, a type hard-shelled algae which is a fossilized deposit of microscopic shells created by one celled plants called Diatoms. These plants inhabit all the waters of the earth, and serve as the basic food for aquatic life, just as grass is the basic food for land animals. Some of these deposits, shifted to dry land, are extremely important to humans.
Diatomaceaous Earth is a naturally occurring, soft, siliceous sedimentary rock that is easily crumbled into a fine white to off-white powder. It has a particle size ranging from less than 1 micrometre to more than 1 millimetre, but typically 10 to 200 micrometres. This powder has an abrasive feel, similar to pumice powder, and is very light as a result of its high porosity.
It is used as a filtration aid, mild abrasive, and mechanical insecticide.
Diatomaceaous Earth is used as an insecticide, due to its physico-sorptive properties. The fine powder absorbs lipids from the waxy outer layer of insects' exoskeletons, causing them to dehydrate. Arthropods die as a result of the water pressure deficiency, based on Fick's law of diffusion. It can also be used to help control and eventually eliminate cockroach and flea infestations and has wide application for insect control in grain storage. It has also been used to control bedbug infestations, but this method may take weeks to work. DE can be used on bedding and rubbed into animals fur to kill fleas and mites.

Uses in Gardening

• Beneficial as a soil additive-safe for earthworms

Diatomaceous Earth will not harm earthworms. Earthworm farmers use it to treat their worm beds for parasites, fungus gnat larva etc. Earth worms are structurally different from insects in that they can actually digest particles of DE. The particles are then eliminated in their castings.

• Works against gastropods and is commonly employed in gardening to defeat slugs and snails.

• Will help reduce garden pests when used in the soil and sprinkled on plants.

• Mix into soil for a soil conditioner. Will retain over 6 times its weight in moisture and will release it as the plants need it. It may also help with nematodes.

• Antifungal properties – good for garden fungal growth

What veterinarians, researchers, integrated pest management, and users of quality Diatomaceaous Earth report:

• Absorbent -useful for spill clean-up. The U.S. Center for Disease Control recommends it to clean
up toxic liquid spills.
• Reduce fly hatch. Keeps fly larvae from developing in manure, noticeably reducing the fly population
• To remove odors – shake on manure, urine, vomit, or spills to absorb odors and moisture
• Reduces moisture and odors in barns, stalls, coops, kennel, litter boxes, compost piles, and other moist areas.
• Use in facial masks to absorb excess oils
• Kills many bugs by dehydration-environmentally safe
• Use to dust animals and animal bedding
• Use in cat litter to absorb moisture and odors
• Lightly rub food grade diatomaceous earth into pets coat and bedding
• On lawns, will retain moisture and prevent drought damage. Adds nitrogen to the soil.
• On camping trips. Dust the ground where you intend to place your tent and camp area.
• Antifungal properties
• Dust under and behind appliances, in window sills, door thresholds and in attics and walls
• Used in seed and grain storage to keep dry and mold free indefinitely. Will allow seeds to sprout after years in storage.
• On lawns, will retain moisture and prevent drought damage
• Keeps fly larvae from developing in manure, noticeably reducing the fly population. (Neighbors no longer complain about flies)
• Sprinkle the ground liberally on and around tree trunks, also may be painted with a mixture of DE and water.

I use to be in so much pain I cried everyday. I am 61 and the doctors wanted to give me a hip replacement. I never liked operations so on I refused; however my pain was so I couldn't walk. I kept searching for a natural way to help myself.
People seem to pity me. Then one day I found DE my life has changed. It has only been six days and I bearly feel any pain at all. So many other good things. I've lost weight, skin looks beautiful, nails stronger, hair ticker. Thank you God for saving me naturally.

DE for self and cats
by Liddy on Dec 12, 2014

I bought this with the intent to use it on myself and my (2) female cats 4/6yrs old.
We have only taken this for a week, we just started week 2. I put 1/2 tsp into my cats wet food in the morning. So far, the oldest has more energy. Poop is formed at times, and other times its mushy and lt. brown and green. Don't know why. So, now I'm giving DE to them 1/2 tsp every other day.
As for myself, I started with 1 tsp for the 1st week. Now on to 2nd week with 2 tsp. I have not noticed anything happening to me.
Folks I will check in in another week and give you an update.

DE Great for everything!
by Teresa Green on Oct 3, 2014

I started putting DE in a drink each morning. 1 heaping tbsp. I used to color my hair. I haven't done that in 3 years. My hair is almost as red now as it was when I was young. I'm almost 60. I brush my teeth with DE once a week. Makes them whiter. Great for strong nails. I've never had nails that grow like this. Gets rid of the yellow look to us older folks toenails. I use it as a facial mask. Makes your skin feel great. I've lost weight by taking it 2 or 3 times a day. I give it to all my animals. Dog, cats, goats, chickens, rabbits. I haven't had to worm any of them in 3 years. Kills all bugs with an exoskeletal system. I have set an open cup with DE in the feed storage container and find the little weevils that get in feed just laying on top of the DE. On and on I could go. This stuff is amazing!

DE diuretic effects
by IzzysMom on Aug 18, 2014

I didn't read closely but one of the side effects of DE is diuretic, increasing urine output by up to 30%. I drink about a gallon of filtered water a day (excluding teas and water used in other healthy beverages) so it surprised me that I started urinating ALOT. At first I thought I had a UTI but when I read more on DE it was clear as day: diuretic effect. Just an observation no complaints here! It's also helped with my IBS so on some days I'm not tethered to the bathroom. I've experienced no adverse effects or hypersensitivities with DE.

Human Food Grade DE
by Patricia on May 24, 2014

Shortly after losing my 12 yr old Wheaton Terrier to a topical (well known) flea product, I bought a home next to a creek and had deer grazing in my backyard. My city dogs had never had a tick but when I found ticks on them and given that I had vowed to never use poisons on my dogs again, I searched for natural remedies and found DE!!!! There are 50 acres of woods behind my house and a creek on one side so I have my share of bugs. Fleas and ticks were my main concern. i have used DE for 5 years now, the deer still graze but I haven't seen a tick since the first week I dusted my yard with it. Only rarely do I even put it on my dogs but if Ido it is only a very light amt at their shoulders and a slight amount at their back above their tail. I've always been told that if DE gets wet, it's not effective... I'm not convinced of that because we had historical amounts of rain last summer. I dusted and it rained so I dusted and it rained... all summer. Usually the fleas are worse when it's damp. I have not seen a flea since early spring last year. I took DE myself for a short while and it me have a sore throat so I stopped and never fed it to my dogs either. For FLEAS and especially TICKS, DE is the best stuff ever.

Diatomaceous earth
by Melissa on Mar 21, 2014

I was recently advised by my doctor to take 1 tbs a day of de. Could you reference the info advising not to take internally? I would be very interested in reading about dangers of it.

    Re: Diatomaceous earth
by Bulk Herb Store on Apr 1, 2014

Yes, you can email us at info@bulkherbstore and we can send you the info we have. I have read much of the great benefits people have experienced with DE, however based on the info we have learned of lately, we don't recommend taking it internally anymore. However, we do believe everybody is entitled to their own opinion and should be free to make their own decision on the matter. Thank you!

safe for humans?
by Aneta on Mar 18, 2014

I am wondering what your reason is for not recommending that humans use DE internally. I have noticed in many different sources that it is consumed for parasites and for the silica it contains that helps the body utilize calcium. How could I apply DE internally to fulfill the tasks of DE as described in your catalog? thanks in advance!

    Re: safe for humans?
by Bulk Herb Store on Mar 18, 2014

Recently we have found research that implies that DE powder may cause intestinal damage in some people. Therefore in order to protect our customers from any possible injury, we recommend not taking it internally. However, your health choices are entirely up to you, and you may choose to go ahead and take DE, we just want to caution our customers as best as we can, with the information that we know. Thanks!

Rapunzel hair
by Kate on Mar 16, 2014

I saw that diatomaceous earth was in your article rapunzel hair, I also see here I see that you have replied to people's questions about this being safe for humans to take internally. It looks like you recommend that humans should not take this internally. Since the rapunzel hair recipe requires it, is the amount used for the recipe for rapunzel hair safe to consume?

    Re: Rapunzel hair
by Bulk Herb Store on Mar 17, 2014

I would recommend that you just omit that out of the recipe. Thanks!

Medications/supplements/treating birds
by Gail on Mar 4, 2014

Is diatomaceous earth safe to use on birds internally, at what dose? And externally? Also will it interfere with medications in humans? Can other supplements be taken with it eg. Vitamin C and MSM?

    Re: Medications/supplements/treating birds
by Bulk Herb Store on Mar 14, 2014

Yes you can give birds DE powder internally. The recommended dosage is 5% in their feed. Externally, I would put it in their nesting boxes along with shavings or whatever else you use, or around the areas they like to dust themselves in. We don't recommend that people take it internally. Thanks!

For humans or animals?
by Rose on Mar 3, 2014

I'm confused. Is Diatomaceous Earth for humans or pets?!
Is this good for preventing parasites in humans? I'm living with some roommates that have parasites & I'm afraid to get it too. their family doctor said that every one at your home should get medicine & I'm trying to find a natural remedy for myself instead of getting pills.

    Re: For humans or animals?
by Bulk Herb Store on Mar 14, 2014

Hello, We don't recommend humans using DE powder internally, however, it is used commonly on pets and animals. I would recommend that you start with these herbs to do a parasite cleanse: Cloves, Wormwood, and Black Walnut Hull Powder. You can easily encapsulate these and they get rid of not only existing parasites but the eggs as well, which many prescription medicines do not. You can find dosage amounts on the internet for how much to take and when. Thanks!

two days so far
by valerie on Dec 19, 2013

I've been taking DE for only two days now, and I am already feeling the affects. (I've had severe constipation since 2007 after a back injury. I can't imagine what toxins I have in my body.) I am getting pain under my right breast, and my head hurts a bit. I am going to leave a comment every few days to show my progress. I am so excited and scared at the same time.

Diatomaceous Earth

I read somewhere that Diatomaceous Earth was great to do a detox soak with...once a week for a month then once a month after that! Or make it into a paste with water and rub body top to bottom and rinse after 30-40 mins! That it clumped on botton of bath and you have to clean it out after the water drains!! I cannot find where I read this info and would love to nor more ASAP!!! Was hoping maybe ya'llwould have some helpful info!! thank you!!

I have not heard of doing that with Diatomaceous Earth but we have recommended doing that with Bentonite Clay. Check out Shoshanna's article 'Stick With It' in our articles section to see what she did for a Bentonite Clay bath soak. Thanks!

food grade
by anom on Dec 7, 2013

Is the DM thats used on farms the same as used on humans, I am I the UK and am wondering how many different grades of purity there are.

    Re: food grade
by Bulk Herb Store on Dec 9, 2013

As far as I can tell DE Powder comes in food grade and non-food grade which would probably be the kind that is used on farms. The difference would be how it was harvested. Thank you!

by Courtney on Nov 29, 2013

I have used everything possible to get rid of roaches, we live in an old trailer and I just can't seem to get rid of them. I heard that it is possible to get rid of them using Fossil Shell Flour. How would I apply this to my home to effectively get rid of them? And do I really have a shot of getting rid of them using this product?

    Re: Roaches
by Bulk Herb Store on Dec 9, 2013

This is a great way to get rid of any kind of bug without spreading harmful bacteria all over your home! To apply all you would have to do is sprinkle the powder liberally on the surface that the roaches crawl over, whether that be on the ground in a pantry, or on the ground around the outside of your home, or on a counter top. Once it gets wet it will no longer be useful. Thanks!

Stink bugs??
by Jennifer on Nov 11, 2013

Do you think this will get rid of stink bugs?? Nothing seems to work!

    Re: Stink bugs??
by Bulk Herb Store on Nov 12, 2013

    Yes! This would help!
Spread this chalky powder both outside and inside, focusing on entryways like windows and doors along with other areas where stink bugs seem to gather.

Diatomaceous Earth is a natural sedimentary rock. It contains silica, alumina, and iron oxide.
The powder is used as a pesticide against a variety of insects, including stink bugs. It works by breaking down the waxy protective layer on an insect's exoskeleton, essentially causing the insect to dehydrate.

Hi "DE" enthusiasts, lovers, and researchers! Wait til you hear this! If anyone would take heed to this, then all the thousands of $ I spent, and all the suffering I went through would be worth it! PLEASE don't make my dilemma be all in vain. Use this info. to benefit you and your loved ones!
I wanted to title this "Thank God For Fleas!" but Corrie Ten Boom beat me to it! LOL! If it wasn't for fleas, I never would have been here to tell you that DE saved my life!!! In the middle of the night my dogs were itching and scratching, I couldn't find fleas, so I Googled "What rids mites...?" And website after website came up talking about "DE", as I read "...kills mites, fleas, bed bugs, insects, parasites < "PARASITES"! OMG!!! I am a groomer and breeder of expensive (show quality) Miniature Schnauzers, (my last sold for $1,500.00) I accidentally itched my left tear duct with dog feces on finger! 2-1/2 days later I got the first migraine ever and was in the left eye! (I thought I'd get Pink Eye! No doctor would treat me, thought I was lying, only wanting drugs, forced me to see a psychiatrist, mocked me, shamed me, etc. until my left eye went sideways and an MRI showed a 7mm ball (nest of worms) by then (after months of suffering), still they refused a parasitic killer. I was in ERs every 10 days - 2 weeks < "incubation period" (Daah!) I then suffered over 100 symptoms (never had before when healthy) in a 1-1/2 year period. I was on my death bed Mar. 18th, 2008, an Infectious Disease Doc decided to listen to me and gave me "Albenza" and saved my life (most all the symptoms left, mainly: migraines, vomiting, brain on fire too, eyes seeing fluorescent, eye turned, 7mm nest, ER visits, temp at 95, etc.) "most" (but not all) worried me, but now it doesn't anymore! I FOUND DE!!! Sept. 9th, 2013, I took 1 Tb. in morn and 1 Tb at night, I also mixed some in peanut butter for the dogs daily dose < they love bite my fingers with it! We love it! I slept like a baby for 2 days (backed off so much and took 1 teas. morn and 1 teas. for night, then upped it gradually). Short lasting pains started happening all over my brain, THEN the 4 main organs I worried about were effected one by one. The gallbladder wrenched with pain then I was finally relieved in ecstasy! The same happened to my liver (I always knew there was probably a liver fluke there, both these organs were attacked with about 8 bites in a row during my horrible ordeal with the 2006-2008 parasite problem. THEN the top right side of my brain was inflamed (I worried, but trusted DE was fighting for me! and I was right...on the third day of taking DE, I had what I believe to be a seizure (my first), I was told it might happen from what I experienced years ago. Lounging, severe tickling in the dead center of my brain for about 30 seconds (kinda felt good) when it stopped, I noticed my eyes were fixed upward (seizure?) Now, are you ready for this?! The day I gave my 92 year old mother-in-law DE, the Alzheimer Center said "What is wrong with her, she was clumsy all day!" when they heard about DE, they yelled at me and said "Stop and ask her doctor first!" < I said "OK!" (but I did my homework and continued. Doctors don't care about us past 85, they are more interested in research of what will happen to someone her age trying something different "At this age, nothing makes a difference!" doctors tell me through the 6 years I have been caregiver to her, she was 111, and I got her up to 133 at doctors amazement). Wow are their thinking wrong! It is now Nov. 1, and not that she no longer (because of DE) wants her brace for her back anymore (she always clung to for dear life for a decade+), nor her cane or walker, nor the fact she doesn't complain of pain anymore, but added to that now: 2 days ago she was so mad we told her to go to bed at 10pm, she shot out of her chair and RAN < R-A-N! through the house saying "Oh for Pete sake!" right to her room! < tell me how that could happen!!! AND! Oct. 15th, I suffered (gladly) a golf ball size pain (migraine) in the top left of my brain! And the next days (when the pain subsided), I suffered drainage like acid all over the left side of my head and when it drained all over the left eyeball, I suffered an eyeball migraine (level 7 pain tolerance, which I have suffered much worse so I refused ER < hate them!) and nausea, and feverish while it drained into neck and chest. Well, today Nov. 1, 2013 I FEEL GREAT! My head is all clear like nothing ever happened, been through another MRI (they didn't find anything), blood tests are fairly good, my sugar is astoundingly lowered and I pigged out on candy this last month! LOL! I lost 2 pounds and didn't try, LOL!!! Oh, I forgot, my movement was getting worse and worse, struggled to get out of bed (for a 57 YO?!) But since the drainage from the golf ball size pain, I can move again and feel like conquering everything! Little by little all the pain around my left eye went. My immune system took care of the waste (toxins) and flushing it out: drinking and drinking ionized water (molecules are half the size of tap and store water) gets to the brain FAST! also it gets more nutrients out of your food and will de-acid it too. I want to note: MAKE SURE you take DE with sugar of some sort (my favorite is a pudding cup mixed with DE in morn, and a yogurt cup mixed with DE at night) The reason be is that "parasites" love sugar and will do anything to get to it (shhh, laced with DE)
My eye doctor who has the most degrees for that specialty did not know of DE! He was glad I told him today and intends on doing his own research on it, he is still amazed how "Albenza" took away that 7mm "Schwannoma" he and his colleges in Michigan called it, but in truth it was called "a nest of worms"! Why do doctors refuse to believe there is a thing called "micro-organisms" and "parasites" (germs, worms, fungus, bacteria, yeast, insects, etc.) and that we humans are perfect hosts (warm, moist, dark, wealthy food source, soft, smelly, etc.)?

Storing DE
by karen on Sep 19, 2013

I would like to know the shelf life of DE, and the best way to store it, will plastic, glass jar, or tin container do? Should I keep them in dark or well lighted? Warm or cool place? Thanks!

    Re: Storing DE
by Bulk Herb Store on Sep 19, 2013

From the information I have been able to get from our supplier and off the web, DE has an unlimited shelf life. I store mine in a cool dark place such as a kitchen cupboard in the plastic bag it comes in. Glass containers would be a great option as well.

I am so thankful for DE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by Marie on Sep 10, 2013

All night long my 3 mini schnauzers scratched and chewed on themselves!! I bathed them (help little) but next morning I went to health food store and got the DE I had been learning about for 3 days. I got the white pure food grade, and powdered them. Stopped the itching and scratching instantly! My husband stopped at Baskin Robbins for ice cream, I had my first swallow of the DE sprinkled on the ice cream (chocolate/peanut butter) and it was like eating malted milk balls! I loved the texture feel and the taste of the DE which is no taste at all and makes you think good thoughts of it (as if malted m. b.) It is so cool, I am sitting here realizing I had lost my appetite, normally I'd get the cravings about now. If this keeps up, I will be thin again and living it up! I slept like a baby (napped after the ice cream) Wow! I feel really soothed, the constant headache I've had for so many days is gone, I feel more at peace. I can't wait to explore all the posibilities DE alows you! I am an artist/inventor and will be thinkening some paint, adding ionized water to my mascara with DE (I had encephilitis in 2006-9 and almost died, accidently itched my left tear duct with dog feces while grooming my mini schnauzers, eventually got to my brain and spread...the worst migraines, brain on fire, etc. over 100 symptoms, finally was allowed to take parasitic killer which saved my life, stopped the regular ER visits, but today have wiggling and twitching in and around the eyes ocasionally) Have been washing eyes daily with eye cleaner, but now I will see what this stuff can do to rid me of this evil forever! I am sooo excited I found this stuff!!! I am now shopping everywhere to get the best deal and highest food grade silica DE available.

pantry moths

I have been fighting pantry moths, if that is what they are called. They came in some of my wheat berries and having a hard time getting rid of them. Would this help to kill whatever was left. 2% DE Added to Pet Food?

Finally I found what I was looking for, how much DE to add to a bag of cat food given to multiple cats; but is the 2% by weight or by quantity? In other words, would I add 1 lb. DE to a 50 lb. bag of food, or would I need to know the dry quantity (cups, quarts, etc.) if the food to figure out how much DE to add?

Cats 1/2 to 1 teaspoon - Per cat. It is easiest to mix this in the cat's food each day so it gets the proper amount.

Safe in herb garden?
by Jeff on Jun 20, 2013

I am growing an herb garden and am having a pest chewing up some of the leaves of my mint and thai chile plants. The destruction is slow, and based on how the leaves are being chewed, I am thinking it's a caterpillar. Is DE effective in killing these, and is it safe for use in an herb garden? Also, is rinsing the powder off the herbs before use effective?

    Re: Safe in herb garden?

Yes our DE is safe to use in your herb garden and from what I have been reading it is affective for caterpillars as well.

I would say there is approx. 1 1/2 - 2 cups per .5 lb. bag.

by Sherri Goedker on May 9, 2013

In the comments, people say DE is great for the fleas on their dogs. Are they using it as an external powder or internally? What is most effective? We live in Guatemala so can't have a lot brought down, but are in the middle of an infestation (yes, I've actually had to put flea powder on my ankles IN the house). Thanks!

    Re: Fleas?
by Bulk Herb Store on May 10, 2013

For fleas, the most effective method would be to dust externally on their skin. You can also put some in their food for parasites etc.!

Use for parasites
by Laura on Mar 3, 2013

My family and I are missionaries in Asia Pacific, and we brought this with us to use for parasite control. The most impressive instance for us was when all for of us came down with giardia pretty bad. We had about 3 days of really bad diarrhea and upset stomach right after eating. I gave everyone a big tablespooon of our diatomaceous earth and within a day we were doing much better. We stopped after two days and the symptoms came back, so we continued for about 5 days, and the symptoms never came back! Now we stock up on this when we are in the States to take back with us, and we are really grateful for an easy, safe way to keep parasites and other stomach problems under control!

Kills parasites
by Emily on Feb 21, 2013

This stuff amazingly cleanses your colon, like nothing else. And I say, it will kill parasites. Note: as stated above it needs to b taken for 60 days to get the full benefit. If you're worried about parasites or a backed up colon, this does the job. I've taken it for 2 weeks now, and am very surprised at having found dead parasites in my stool. Yuck! The DE killed them, and then you naturally pass them through your stool. Highly, highly recommend this!

Heavy metal removal
by Cyndi on Feb 20, 2013

I started taking DE regularly many years ago to help with removing heavy metals from my system after having two serious metal poisoning episodes and persistent symptoms. Although it took a couple of years, I became symptom free, which I believe was mainly a result of taking diatomaceous earth.
We have also used it for our pets as well as farm animals for pest control and general health maintenance.
Great stuff! Tastes like dirt, but after you get used to taking it, is not a big deal.

From our Mailbox

Hi: Just wanted to let you know that I received my books on Monday, May 2. Everything was just perfect. My favorite so far is the cookbook Nourishing Traditions. What a wealth of information it contains! I am amazed at how very naive and ignorant I am with respect to the manufacturing and marketing of our foods. I have shared so much with my husband and, as a result, we are committed to making continual and life long changes. I have to say also that The How to Herb Book is continually found in one of my children's hands. They are quite open to learning and trying. May your business continue to bless those who find it and may God continue to Bless your business! I will place an order for the herbs as soon as I determine which ones my family would most benefit from.

With much gratitude.
