Excerpts from The How to Herb Book

Echinacea is often put in combinations with other herbs. It is an excellent infection fighter and is used as a powerful natural antibiotic. A great immune booster.

  • A good cleanser for glands and the lymphatic system.
  • One of the best herbs for helping enlargements and weakness of the prostate gland.
  • Used in ear aches, strep throat, and lymph glands.

Excerpts from Nutritional Herbology

In practical use today, Echinacea is used primarily to build resistance to infections of the respiratory and digestive tracts.

The proven actions of Echinacea are due to water-soluble polysaccharides. They act by sequestering the attacks of various microbes and allow the body to heal itself. Upon reaching an infected area, the polysaccharides have an immunostimulant effect, which results in the production of leucocytes (white blood cells). The resulting phagocytic action of the leucocytes effectively eradicates a number of infectious organisms.

From Our Reading and/or Experience...

  • We use Echinacea often in tea and tincture combinations for a wide variety of internal and external physical needs. Of course, it can be used in many other types of remedies. For instance, it can easily be made into powder, and used in capsules.
  • Echinacea is a contact healer. It can be used for a variety of inflammatory conditions externally. As such, it is a good idea to have some on hand in emergencies and know how to use it.
  • Unlike most herbs, Echinacea should only be used when you know you have a need, rather than on a regular basis as a supplement. Again, this is different than most herbs.
  • It can be used to benefit anyone: men, women (including before, during or after pregnancy, and nursing), children and animals.
  • As is the case with most herbs, Echinacea should be stored in a dark, dry, and cool place.

Good for anything up to an elephant!
by Bob in Idaho on Feb 23, 2009

As a skeptic .. I've been stung before .. this ain't my first rodeo .. Quarter Horse breeder .. I started giving Echinacea to my horses and noted it was human/food grade.

It cured my horses .. no more hauling to the vet .. one spoon full in wet oats .. cured the dogs too .. and then on day I caught the Hong Kong Flu and went through a box of Kleenex in eight hours and said "this is
enough." I took a spoonful and made a tea and slept like a baby and was clear headed the next morning. Sold me!

Now, on prolonged illnesses I not only rest one day a week and don't give any herbs (Sunday) .. I also switch to Yarrow if there is a need for a second week of dosage. For dogs .. mix half a spoonful echinacea with olive oil to a thick tacky paste .. gather it out of your palm with a Popsicle stick .. thumb over the tounge and fingers under the jaw and spread the slime on the back of their tounge .. hold their mouth closed for a spell. I surely do hope this isn't to technical for any of you. I think a half to a spoon full of echinacea is good for about anything up to an elephant. ~Bob - Idaho
