Eucalyptus is best known for the treatment of respiratory ailments. The oil which comes from the leaves, roots, and bark has antibacterial, antiseptic, and astringent qualities. Eucalyptus also has a warming effect. It is an effective expectorant and is used in many commercial lozenges, rubs, and liquids to clear mucus from the nose, lungs and to relieve upper respiratory distress. Inhaling steam mixed with the oil helps relieve bronchitis, asthma, croup, and other respiratory distresses.
