Mama's Milk Tea - Organic

Herbal Mixes: Mama's Milk Tea

Contains Natural Caffeine Free: Red raspberry leaf, fennel seed, nettle leaf, fenugreek seed, dandelion leaf, blessed thistle

Mama's Milk Tea helps you nursing mamas increase your milk supply and the nutritional value of your milk.

Precautions: Not recommended for use during pregnancy.

I normally add 3 tablespoons of the premixed herbs to 2 cups of water. (This makes for a strong tea. You are welcome to use less than 3 tablespoons, if you find it too strong).

Bring to a gentle boil and simmer for no longer than 10 minutes. Strain off the herbs, and add raw honey, if desired. I found that drinking 3 - 6 cups a day increased my milk supply considerably. (I have drunk as much as 8 cups in one day with very good results). It's very important to stay hydrated while nursing by drinking lots of liquids. The tea helped in that as well.

For more information on making teas, see the Preparing Remedies page. The following books have been our best references on making our own teas over the years:

From Our Reading and/or Experience...

  • This dry herb mixture can be made into a tincture. As a tincture, it would be even more effective than as a tea. Directions for making tinctures can be found on the Preparing Remedies page. Just remember to drink lots of water with it.
  • The mixture can also be ground up into powder and encapsulated.
  • Because of the Fenugreek, avoid using it internally during pregnancy.
  • This recipe is not just for nursing mamas. Because of the cleansing properties of these herbs, anyone can benefit from their cleansing effects on the liver, gall bladder and kidneys.
  • It can be used to benefit anyone: men, women (except during pregnancy), children and animals.
  • It can be used as often as you would like, and in any way you choose.
  • As is the case with most herbs, this mixture should be stored in a dark, dry, and cool place. Refrigeration or freezing is great, but certainly not necessary. Following these suggestions will delay the loss of its highly valued nutritional and medicinal properties.

On average how long does a 0.5 pound bag of tea last? I'm not sure how much I should order.

    Hi Amanda!

I use the Mamma's Milk Tea myself and a half pound bag lasts me approximately 2 weeks.

Great Tea!
by Leigh on Feb 7, 2014

First let me say that I was not a fan of this tea because it was extremely bitter. I made the tea in batches so that I can drink it with my meals but I just couldn't get passed the taste. So I decided to go with another product because the taste was better, but the quality of my milk and the amount I was producing was not the same as when I was drinking Mama's Milk Tea. What I decided to do was drink it hot and I didn't find it to be bitter.. My milk production is amazing and the quality of milk is awsome. Thank you guys for making a tea that is benefical to both mom and baby!

Use while pregnant?
by Krista Denton on Dec 28, 2013

I noticed that this tea is not recommended for use while pregnant. I'm wondering why. Are there ingredients that can lead to miscarriage?

    Re: Use while pregnant?
by Bulk Herb Store on Dec 30, 2013

Hello, This tea contains Red Raspberry which if not taken before getting pregnant may cause slight cramping of the uterus. Thanks!

Encapsulated form?
by Anonymous on Aug 31, 2013

I saw that one of the ways to ingest this product is ground up and encapsulated. If using a 00 size capsule, how many should I take daily?

    Re: Encapsulated form?
by Bulk Herb Store on Sep 3, 2013

I would recommend taking the amount recommended for drinking as a tea. Please understand that you must drink plenty of water if taking in capsule form. It's best to drink as a tea so your getting the necessary liquids down that you need for nursing. It will not have the same affect if you take it in capsule form without drinking plenty of water. Thanks!

Checking Expiration
by Beth on Aug 8, 2013

How long does this tea keep? It was given to me by a friend, so I wanted to make sure it is still safe to use. Can you let me know?

    Re: Checking Expiration

The recommended time is two years. After then, herbs can start to lose their potency. Thanks!

Simmering question
by Shannon on Jul 25, 2013

I noticed in the instructions for mama milk tea you say not to simmer no longer than 10 mins. What happens if you do it longer? I had been putting water in tea kettle then filling the tea ball with mama milk mix and a little chamomile removing it from heat and letting it set till I got around to putting it in a picture for ice tea. Sometimes it might have set for an hour or two. Is this bad for me?

    Re: Simmering question
by Bulk Herb Store on Aug 2, 2013

You can let it sit for an hour. It's not bad for you! We just don't recommend simmering the tea for a long time as it can turn the tea bitter.

Number of Servings

If going by the 3tbsp per 2c of water, how many servings will a .5lb bag make?

Other uses
by Bex on Jun 4, 2013

I had too many issues blocking my nursing so as of 2 months ago i stopped.( not tea related ) My question is my left over tea. It states can be used by men and women but what are other uses for the tea ? I cant seem to find any research on it online

If you look up each individual herb contained in the tea, you can find the benefits of each herb.

tea with orange band
by Edith Erickson on May 19, 2013

I received some tea with an orange band as a gift. I wanted to make sure that this is the "mother's milk" tea. I believe it is but I wanted to check and make sure. Thanks so much!

    Re: tea with orange band
by Bulk Herb Store on May 21, 2013

You would need to contact the person that gave it to you as a gift, as it was apparently repackaged if it had an orange band around it and didn't have our label on it.

Is it recommended while pregnant?
by Sarah on May 5, 2013

I just purchased this tea. I have been drinking red raspberry leaf only for 3 years. I just found out I was pregnant and wanted to make sure it was safe during pregnancy. Would you suggest the mothers milk tea and raspberry? Thank you so much!

Re: Is it recommended while pregnant?
by Bulk Herb Store on May 9, 2013

Red raspberry is great for use during pregnancy, especially the last trimester. During the first trimester it is better to keep it at 1-2 cups of tea per day, but by the last trimester you can take 4-6 cups a day if you want. The Mama's Milk Tea is not recommended for use during pregnancy because of the Fenugreek seed.

My favorite lactation tea!
by Jillian on Apr 12, 2013

I love this tea! I've tried many different varieties of lactation tea (both loose and in tea bags) and this one wins, hands down for flavor and boosting milk supply. Highly recommend!

by shelby on Mar 23, 2013

how does it taste? i had a recipe for a mama's milk which is very similar to yours but it tasted terrible. i did everything i could to make it taste better but nothing helped. how does yours taste? any bitterness?
thank you

    Re: mama's milk tea
by Bulk Herb Store on Apr 26, 2013

It is definitely not the most palatable tea and it does have some bitter taste to it. So you need to want it's benefits enough to drink it!

Question: how much tincture to take?
by Viktoriya on Nov 18, 2012

I just got my herbs to make my Momma's milk tea. I also want to make a tincture out of it. Once it's done and ready, how much of it do I take a day? What is your recommendation?
Thank you in advance, Viktoriya.

Re: Question: how much tincture to take?
by Bulk Herb Store on Mar 21, 2013

We don't have the amounts you would use if you made Momma's milk tea into a tincture but personally I'd probably take 1or 2 droppers 1-3 times a day.

Expiration Date?
by Kristin on Jul 27, 2012

How long are these herbs good? I have a bag that I bought after my second child was born (May 2011), and now I am pregnant with our third child. Can I use the rest of this after our baby is born? He/she is due in March 2013. Thanks :).

    Re: Expiration Date?
by Bulk Herb Store on Dec 11, 2012

The herbs should be fine as long as they were stored properly which would be in a dark, cool, and dry place or in the freezer.

Underweight Babies Do Not Need Formula Supplement
by Rachel Sims on Jun 24, 2012

My third baby is now 8 months and I just now discovered tea for breastfeeding. So far, all three of my girls have been very petite, tiny babies, and at the bottom percentile for weight but normal for height. My pediatrician sent me to a specialist with my second to check for gastrointestinal problems but after much testing there was "nothing wrong". So this time he didn't even worry about it. But each time he just told me to increase calories, supplement with formula. I bought the Mama's Milk from Bilk Herb Store and in just a week my baby felt heavier! She is actually satisfied after nursing. I have to work so I pump, and I used to only get less than an ounce at a time. Now I get three. Still not too much, but it seems to satisfy her, and my sister in law doesn't have to feed her formula when she is babysitting her. I have been recommending this to my friends and family, and the Red Raspberry Leaf Tea to the pregnant ones!

Such a great product!
by Claire Phillips on Jun 21, 2012

Thank you so much for such a great product. My little one has acid reflux, and he will barely nurse for two day periods when his tummy is hurting, which causes me supply issues when he does feel good. I was afraid that I would have to stop nursing do to a shortage of milk, which is opposite of what his little tummy needs. After taking this tincture for one day my milk supply was back! Thank you for all of your helpful videos too. This was my first tincture to make, and being able to watch you make some made it so easy for me to do the same.

Milk came in fast
by Kim Crawford on Jun 21, 2012

It usually takes close to four days for my milk to come in after giving birth. I started drinking the tea several hours after birth and within 24 hours had plenty of milk for my hungry newborn. I will recommend this product to all my new mother friends.

It helped save my daughters' lives!
by Alicia Huff on Jun 21, 2012

Your Mama's Milk Tea is such a blessing! My twin girls were born at 25 weeks and during their 3 1/2 month stay in the Neonatal ICU I was determined to give them the best chance of survival I could by pumping and bringing breastmilk to them. The nurses and lactation consultants warned me it is very difficult to maintain a milk supply by only pumping and with so much stress, especially for twins. I also wanted to do everything I could to improve the quality of my milk. My girls needed every bit of help they could get (they had life-threatening intestinal problems). I made the tea into a tincture and noticed a difference in my milk right away! I began producing more and it was much richer and fattier! They are 5 months old now and healthy! I am still taking the tincture and keeping up with growth spurts. They were born weighing 1lb 9oz and now weigh 7 and a half pounds! Thank you for such good quality. It helped save my daughters' lives!

Is it safe to use a tincture during pregnancy? Such as the mama's milk tea tincture someone mentioned making to drink for boost of milk.

Great results!
by Julie Guglielmo on Jun 11, 2012

I LOVE this tea! With my first child I had a hard time establishing and maintaining a good milk supply. Consequently, my son consistenly weighed less, nursed frequently/frantically, and was less satisfied. With my second child I started immediately drinking Mama's Milk Tea (32 - 64 oz a day to start and then after the first month or so, only when I felt low on milk or if she was going through a growth spurt etc) ) and had exceptional results. Within her first couple weeks of life she not only maintained but far surpassed her original birth weight and has continued to thrive month after month. She is healthy and happy. Praise the Lord for these wonderful herbs! With the first child I drank Traditional Medicinals Mother's Milk Tea, which did give me a little boost, but not like Mama's Milk Tea. This tea is also so much fresher and better tasting. I am sad that the tea is unsafe for pregnancy because my milk supply really decreases during pregnancy. Do you have any suggestions for herbs that might help build my milk supply while pregnant and breastfeeding? Also, will drinking alot of red raspberry leaf tea have a negative effect on my milk supply while I continue to nurse through pregnancy? Thank you!

The Red Raspberry is great to drink by itself and the best one during pregnancy!

More satisfied
by Jessi Elizabeth on Jun 7, 2012

I have a 4.5 month old son and had been using Yogi or Natural Medicinals teas until recently when I ordered yours. I enjoyed the other teas but they gave me gas. Yours does not only not affect my tummy at all but seems to make my milk higher in quality. My son hasn't needed to eat as many times a day and seems more satisfied afterwards. You have a loyal customer in me! I've also been checking out your other teas and am excited to try them. They look delicious!

The Mama's Milk tea has proved very affective for seasonal allergies. For the last several seasons, my family, has been symptom-free when we're drinking the tea! Now that I'm pregnant and can't drink the tea, I'm suffering greatly! I'm doing all other remedies I can think of, but nothing works like the Mama's Milk tea!

Baby is thrilled!
by JW on Jun 2, 2009

I love this tea! I've been having some supply issues lately and really had a tough time getting through my four month old's growth spurt. I've been using this and my supply is back up to where it should be. My baby is thrilled with the extra milk. Thanks for a great, natural product!

Pleased with Mama's Milk Tea!
by Nancy on Feb 3, 2009

i just want to tell you how pleased i am with the "mama's milk tea". i am new to herbs and this is my first real attempt to use them for medicinal purposes. i had a baby in november and began drinking the tea as soon as i came home from the hospital. this is my 4th baby and in the past i have struggled to get the milk going in the first month. this time my milk came in just fine and not only that but my baby made a substantial weight gain as well. at 2 months of age she has made a 5 pound weight gain. the pediatrician was amazed, he said breast-fed babies usually do not gain like that! well, i know that this is not a scientific experiment, but the results were sure different for me this time with the tea. i am a believer now, for sure, and plan to learn more about herbs. thank you for all your work and for offering a website with such great information. God Bless you

Mama's Tea - Double Success!
by Victoria on Dec 2, 2008

I just recently purchased Mama's Milk tea because my son has begun to nurse a lot more. He's already a hefty little man at 25 lbs and 7 months old, but I wanted to make sure that I had more milk than he needed as his growth spurt seemed to leave me more "empty" than usual. He's also had a cough for almost 2 months that I have tried (rather unsuccessfully) to eliminate. I've eaten even more greens and consumed Echinacea (which helped a little) but still it would not leave. The day my herbs arrived in the mail I made the Mama's milk tea by whirling the dried herbs in my coffee grinder and then making a nice steamy drink. Shortly thereafter my milk was coming in very strong. In addition my son's cough was gone within 24 hours and has stayed away!! Praise the Father for HIS provision! Thank you for providing these wonderful herbs at such a great price!

Answer to My Prayers
by Catherine on Jun 16, 2008

"Mama's Milk Tea has been an answer to my prayers. I was unable to nurse for a full year with my first two children, but now that I have Mama's Milk Tea my milk supply is staying ample for baby #3. A friend suggested that I turn it into a tincture so I take 3 tsps. per day. I added some peppermint to help with the flavor! Many thanks for the great products! I am one grateful momma!

A question....
by Sharla on Sep 29, 2006

I love your Mama's Brew, but I always make a gallon of it to drink as ice tea...could I do the same with Mama's Milk Tea? Would I use the same quantities as with the Raspberry blend?

    Re: A question....
by Bulk Herb Store on Sep 30, 2006

Yes, you can make a gallon using the same proportion of herb mix to water.
