Is Red Raspberry Leaf Right For You?

Red Raspberry Leaf is the herb of choice for pregnancy, and for women's health. Red Raspberry is not only great for mamas, it is wonderful for their whole family. It is filled with essential minerals and vitamins like magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, vitamin C, E, A and B complex. It also contains easily assimilated calcium and iron. Red Raspberry can make a real difference in your whole family’s health. Todays herbal market is flooded with Red Raspberry. The problem is, most of it is sprayed, irradiated, old, dried out and pour quality. We are proud to say that ours is not. We sell Red Raspberry that is non-radiated, organically grown, fresh-cut and dried to perfection. Our Red Raspberry Leaf is packed full of the nutrients that you need.

Red Raspberry Leaf Tea

Red Raspberry is the best single herb that we can take for total uterine health. There is a long list of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that the uterus needs to work efficiently. Red Raspberry Leaf has virtually all of them. The most popular use for Red Raspberry Leaf Tea is for mama and baby’s health throughout pregnancy. It provides your uterus with a nourishing source of vitamins and minerals that are vital for a healthy pregnancy. Red Raspberry is also an excellent source of an alkaloid called fragrine, which tones the muscles of the pelvic region, including the uterus itself. This really helps to lower and sometimes eliminate cramps from the menstrual cycle and also makes for an easier birth. Red Raspberry leaves also contain many vitamins like vitamin C, E, A, B complex, and minerals like magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, manganese, selenium, silicon, sulfur, tannins, also easily assimilated calcium and iron. All of this makes Red Raspberry leaf the best base available for all of these teas. I love this naturally occurring herb that was created for women's health.

The Uterus

The uterus is one of the most amazing organs in the female body. We ask our uterus to sit docile for decades, and then in 38 short weeks of pregnancy, it has to stretch to 10 times the size it has always been. It starts at the size of a tennis ball, and has to stretch to the size of a beach ball. WOW! The uterus adds around 2 pounds of muscle and process as much as one liter of blood per minute. When our baby is ready, we start to flood the uterus with hormones called prostaglandins, making the uterine muscle cells more sensitive to the hormone oxytocin, simultaneously softening the cervix. And then it is time; we start to sweat, scream, and even swear, that we can’t do it, and we are right. We can’t, but our uterus can. Relax and let your uterus do its work. The contractions start to pound the uterus, exerting as much as 43 pounds per square inch, contracting and retracting. Then, finally, in a beautiful moment we meet our little sweetheart. A healthy uterus gives you a healthy baby. So ladies, lets stop taking our uterus for granted and show it some love.

Calcium

Red Raspberry Leaf Tea is full of a naturally occurring calcium that is easily absorbed by the body. In the smooth muscle of the uterus, calcium controls the depolarization of the cells. That in turn, allows the uterine muscle to receive oxygen and work efficiently. In other words, without a sufficient supply of calcium, only part of the uterine muscle will work as it should. This will strain the rest of the uterine muscle beyond reason, generating heat and stress on an already taxed body.
Getting enough calcium also eases the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Calcium helps to regulate the hormones your body is flooded with every month. If your calcium supplies are adequate your body will not have to release as many of the hormones that cause PMS . Women who suffer from PMS have elevated levels of these hormones during their menstrual cycle, and the symptoms of PMS, like cramping, irritability, and depression are all very similar to other calcium-deficient symptoms.

Magnesium

Magnesium helps to control the frequency of contractions by mitigating the repolarization of the muscle cells and slowing down the absorption of certain hormones. It is also needed to metastasize calcium to your bones.

Seven years ago there was a flurry of warnings over the web not to use large amounts of red raspberry leaf(only European raspberry) during early pregnancy. I always take the safe road, so I cautioned pregnant ladies to only drink a cup or two a day of raspberry until they were 5 months along. Now trusted researchers go on record as saying that Raspberry is safe for pregnant women. Here are two sources that are respected and helpful. Debi Pearl

Excerpts from The How the Herb Book

Red Raspberry Leaf is used as a basic herbal foundation for all female organs and problems. It is in many female combinations.

  • Strengthens wall of uterus and entire female reproductive system.
  • Decreases profuse menstrual flow.
  • Good during all months of pregnancy. Alleviates morning sickness and nausea. Assists labor, makes delivery easier and relieves after pains. Tones and regulates before, during and after childbirth.
  • Increases and enriches milk for lactation, can be combined with marshmallow tea.
  • Raspberry tea is mild and pleasant to taste. It is good for stomachaches and bowel problems in children. For diarrhea in babies.
  • Soothing to stomach and bowels and cankerous conditions of mucous membranes in the alimentary canal.
  • High mineral and vitamin source.

Case History

L. was terribly nauseous during the first trimester of her pregnancy. She felt weak and was receiving B-12 shots from her doctor. She started drinking 3 to 4 cups of Red Raspberry tea every day, the nausea went away. She was able to start eating again, and felt the tea helped her during delivery too.

Excerpts from Nutritional Herbology

Red raspberry leaf tea is one of the most renowned herbal teas. It has a wide reputation as a female tonic for relieving excessive menstrual bleeding. For pregnant women, it is used to relieve nausea, to tone the uterus in preparation for childbirth and to reduce the pain of childbirth.

Because of its widespread availability in pleasantly flavored teas, the astringent leaves are administered to children with diarrhea, flu, and vomiting.

Contains astringent compounds that relieve pain and shrink inflamed tissues, especially in the female reproductive system. It also contains bitter compounds that relieve smooth muscle spasms. it is an excellent herb source of manganese.

Red Raspberry Leaf is high or very high on the following nutrients:

  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • Magnesium
  • Manganese
  • Niacin
  • Selenium
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin C

  • Excerpts from Practical Herbalism

The renowned Quaker herbalist, Henry Box, is quoted as saying, "A tea made from Red Raspberry leaves is the best gift God ever gave to women. Its utility in travail is surprising. As a drink before and after confinement, it is unequaled by any other agent. If the pains of childbirth are premature, it will make all quiet. When timely, it will occasion a safe and easy parturition. If the mother is weak, it will abundantly strengthen her, cleanse her and enrich her milk.

The tea has been taken freely during all phases of pregnancy, and particularly during the last trimester to tone the uterus, and prepare the body for delivery. Dr. Christopher summed it up thus:
"When taken regularly in pregnancy, the infusion will quiet inappropriate premature pains and produce a safe, speedy, and easy delivery. Raspberry leaves stimulate, tone, and regulate before and during childbearing, assisting contractions and checking hemorrhage during labor, relieving after-pains, then strengthening, cleansing, and enriching the milk of the mother in the post-delivery period."

    From Our Reading and/or Experience...

    • Red Raspberry is one of our favorite flavors in teas.
    • We use it often in tea and tincture combinations. Of course, it can be used in many other types of remedies. For instance, it can easily be ground up, and used in capsules.
    • It can be used to benefit anyone: men, women (including before, during or after pregnancy, and nursing), children and animals.
    • It can be used as often as you would like, and in any way you choose.
    • As is the case with most herbs, it should be stored in a dark, dry, and cool place. Refrigeration or freezing is great, but certainly not necessary. Following these suggestions will delay the loss of its highly valued nutritional and medicinal properties.

    Ground for capsules
    by C L Ray on May 19, 2013

Can these leaves be ground for capsules? I've been taking red raspberry capsules that I get from an online vitamin store but if I could buy this, ground it , and encapsulate it myself that would be much more cost efficient. The ones I take now look like green powder in a clear capsule so I'm assuming that's what they are doing.

I don't know how well it will work as I have never tried it myself but you could definitely try it!

I have been drinking red raspberry tea for 10years or more. I have always had painful menstral cycles. I had tried everything, my mom researched everything and came across info on red raspberry tea. We gave it a try and my life has been so much better, my cycle length decreased, the cramps decreased. I LOVE this tea and live by it.

    Tincture
by Amanda Wells on Jan 10, 2013

Would it be safe to use this as a tincture during pregnancy?Obviously you would want to use glycerin...If so what ratio would you use and would id be any more potent as a tincture than it already is as a tea?

      Re: Tincture
by Bulk Herb Store on Mar 25, 2013

Yes, you could make a tincture with it if you use glycerine and you can find instructions on how to make a glycerite on our website under "How-To". We like to use about 40% water and 60% glycerine to cut back on the sweetness. It would be stronger than the tea but not as strong as an alcohol based tincture!

One Day of Drinking Red Raspberry Tea
by Keshia on Aug 30, 2012

All I can say is WOW! I am 8 weeks pregnant and this is my 4th pregnancy. The moment I found out I was pregnant the backache, uterus pain and vomiting started as in all my pregnancy. I was so disappointed that I got pregnant because my 2nd baby died still birth. With my 3rd baby I was on 9 months bed rest. My friend researched and found this tea. She was determine to help me with this pregnancy. Today I started off the day as every other day of this 4th pregnancy sick as a dog. By noon the door bell rang and it was my red raspberry tea. I immediately put the water on to make my tea. I promise to Yah by the time I finish the cup of tea I did not feel nauseate anymore. So far today I spent for four on the road with my husband, I had no pain, no vomiting, full of energy. I just had my 2nd cup of tea. I can not believe how well this works. I am so grateful, I real feel this tea is going to be great for my whole pregnancy. I am actually excited now about this pregnancy.

    Red raspberry leaf
by Rashelle Gillett on Aug 20, 2012

I am nine weeks pregnant and was struggling with nausea just a couple of weeks into my pregnancy. I ordered the red raspberry leaf and started making it into tea. It has really helped keep the nausea at bay. I drink it as soon as I get up in the morning and sip it all day long. If I wake up in the middle of the night and feel sick, I drink it and usually I feel much better within a few minutes. Thank you for a high quality product at such a reasonable price.

relief for 90 day menstrual cycle
by Jen Howard on Jun 25, 2012

My 12 year old daughter had her first 2 periods very normally. However, after skipping 2 cycles, she began to bleed heavily. After 2 straight weeks I began to worry, and after 30 days of bleeding consulted my practioner. she prescribed microgestin, a birth control, but the bleeding didn't stop after a full packet of pills. After taking her in for an embarrassing exam for a 12 year old, the doctor increased the dose. the bleeding did not stop, but her breasts began noticably getting larger, her hair and skin were losing their shine, and she was exhasusted. They tried straight progesterone which made her bleed clots after 2 pills. She had been bleeding for 90 days straight. I was desperate to know what to do for my normally healthy little girl, and after some research discovered red raspberry leaf tea. I stopped the birth control, and she started drinking 3-4 cups a day, the bleeding STOPPED in 3 days!!!!!! After all that she went through and raspberry leaf tea could have prevented it!!!! Now I know, and tell all my friends the miracle of raspberry leaf tea!!!!

    Eases menstrual cramps!
by Tracy on Jun 25, 2012

I just ordered your Red Raspberry Leaf tea on Friday and received it today (Monday). Wow, talk about fast delivery...and just in time too! When I first began menstruating at the age of 12, I was blessed with very regular and painless cycles. But, lately (now 24) I have gradually been experiencing moderate to severe menstrual cramps that usually last the first 2 days of each cycle. And about a week before, my husband notices my severe PMS symptoms of being very emotionally sensitive for no apparent reason other than my knowing hormones are just whacked! My cycle just started with menstrual cramps on the way, of course. As soon as your tea arrived, we made a pitcher and have enjoyed two cups, with the menstrual cramps GONE! We've been married for almost a year and have also been trying for a baby the past couple months with no luck, yet. We're excited to continue to drink this tea, with the hopes of an even bigger miracle! What a blessing you are, Bulk Herb Store. I am now your biggest fan for life! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

    Yummy Tea
by Valerie on Jun 13, 2012

Just recieved my first order yesterday. I was thrilled! I am about 32 weeks pregnant and am currently sipping on a big mug of hot red raspberry leaf and nettle leaf teas combined. So yummy! I have low iron and had a long, hard homebirth with my first child so I am hopeful that this great combination will help strengthen my uterus to make this go around a little easier. :o) Thank you so much for your wonderful products, information and videos!

    Pain relief at last!!!
by Abigail Lassiter on Jun 13, 2012

I am a complete and total believer in red raspberry leaf! At 14 years old my doctor suggested "the pill" for irregular and very difficult menstrual cycles. At the time I thought it was a little bit of pride saying, "no way! I'm a 14 year Christian girl and not sexually active thank you very much!" but looking back I can see GOD was helping me use some good common sense about not adding artificial hormones to my body. I continued struggling through cycles and started researching alternative medicines and herbs. My mother received the No Greater Joy magazines and I saw an ad for The Bulk Herb Store. I bought 1.5lbs of Mama's Red Raspberry Tea and started faithfully drinking it the day it arrived. One, just one, cycle and I could tell a HUGE difference. Instead of eight days of bleeding, it was only five. Instead of spending two days in bed and in the bathtub curled in a fetal position with a hot water bottle and praying the ibuprofen would kick in, I had a dull (manageable) backache. Wow! I could get used to this! I drank a pitcher of red raspberry tea several days a week and my cycles actually became regular. After two years of never having a clue when my life would stop for a couple days, I developed a nice normal pattern that I could predict. The months I didn't drink my tea, I paid for it. If I didn't take the time to make a pitcher regularly, when my cycle came around I would have cramps and extra day of bleeding. I have given this tea to so many friends and recommended this site over and over again. Red raspberry leaf was my start into natural, whole, healthy living. Thank you Bulk Herb Store for providing herbs and so much information!

    Raspberry Leaves For Horses
by Amber on Mar 30, 2010

I also decided to try raspberry leaves for my mare, in place of the usual commercial supplement available to horses (mostly to reduce the cost).

The recommended dose is 3.75grams once a day. Loading dose is 3.75 twice a day for two weeks. The raspberry leaves take about a month to start kicking in. My mare's worst time is spring, so I start her on the leaves about a month before. There have been some warning about horses becoming too used to the herbs, so take them off the leaves when they really don't need them. (For us, I take the leaves away in fall, through winter, and start again a month before spring.)

I've noticed a big difference in my horse. She doesn't try to attack the other horses very often, and we don't have much trouble with her being more interested in the other horses than she is in working. She's calmer, and not as rude. I've noticed that when I run out and have her off the leaves for a few weeks, she goes back to her normal, angry self.

One thing to watch out for is the selenium. It says on the site that raspberry leaves are high in selenium. If you are in a high-selenium area, or feed a selenium supplement (or any of your food/supplements have selenium in them), do make sure you aren't feeding a high dose. Horses need selenium, but too much will kill them. They need about 3mg a day, but as much as 2mg over that amount can lead to selenium poisoning.

Anyway, raspberry leaves have been an effective alternative to conventional mare supplements/drugs, and I've noticed a big difference in my horse's behavior when she's on them.

They can also be given to geldings. It is supposed to calm them down as well.

    Red Raspberry - cut
by KW on Mar 22, 2010

Ladies, I bought this tea thinking it would be tasty, not knowing the effect it would have on my body. For years my menstrual cycle has been so heavy that in first 2-3 days I couldn't leave the house (I am 36). I began drinking this tea about 2 weeks before my next cycle, I can not tell you (it to me was nothing short of a miracle) my flow was so light. Unbelievable! A normal cycle used to last me about 8-10 days! Thanks Bulk Herb Store! I feel like I have my life back after 13 years! Oh, and it was super tasty, I love the mint flavor!

    Works for Horses and Humans
by Ksenia on Jan 27, 2010

I bought the raspberry leaf as an inexpensive alternative to a commercial red raspberry leaf product used to calm mares. My mare has improved in temperament. She is a lot more tractable and willing, and less bad tempered and angry. We have not had any falls or accidents with the mare, and she has not kicked or bitten us since we used it. My training was not working before and she was getting more dangerous with each passing month, but now it looks like the same training is finally starting to be effective.

From my reading about a similar mare and my experience with my mare, it looks like one can expect to see results within about 3 months of feeding a small scoop (what is known as a 1 oz. scoop, which is about a heaping tablespoon) each day. Probably feeding more, and more often, would be more effective but I was trying to watch my costs. Also it is important to watch the diet of the horse. Try to eliminate corn and oats which cause horses to be excitable, etc. Rice bran is good to feed along with the raspberry leaf.

When I read about the benefits of raspberry leaf on this site, I tried some raspberry tea. I have ADD, and sometimes suffer from mild depression and anxiety. I took 8 fish oil pills a day, the psychiatric dose for depression. Since I started drinking the raspberry leaf tea regularly, I have been able to stop the fish oil pills completely. I am happier, my mood is more positive, my mind is alert and focused, and I am not as forgetful. I have been offering it to family and friends, and they comment that they like the taste, and like knowing that it is more healthy than regular tea. The baby seems to enjoy the tea with fresh goat milk and honey, and so now she can drink hot tea just like the rest of us. Also, as a nursing mom, I am happy that this is building up my milk supply. I was so pleased with the tea that I gave it to friends and family for Christmas and they liked the gift. A great, non-clutter gift that doesn't break the bank.

    Boosts overall well-being in pregnancy
by Angel on Nov 10, 2009

My experience with Red Raspberry leaf was all in hindsight...meaning I didn't realized that it helped me at the time!

I took red raspberry leaf with our 4th pregnancy (in 2008), though not too consistently. During my third trimester, though, I used it almost daily. I went into labor two weeks before my due date, and made a giant to-go cup with me to bring as I drove to meet my midwife. I chugged that almost 2 quart thing of tea within an hour that afternoon, and by early evening my labor completely stopped. I always wondered how and why it stopped after being supposedly so real. After doing more research, I realized that drinking the red raspberry leaf tea beforehand stopped my false labor! I actually had my baby 4 days past my "due date" :)

This pregnancy, I have been drinking a quart a day from the beginning (the Mama's Red Raspberry Brew), which is about 3 big glasses a day (sometimes more). I have more energy this pregnancy, seem to have stayed healthier, and am able to run around, homeschool and take care of our home without being depleted when my hubby gets home.

Also, I have seasonal depression in the winter/dark months which starts to creep up in the fall, and becomes a dark cloud over me for about 4 months. This is the first time I have enjoyed seeing the leaves fall, and I am truly looking forward to the winter months. That is a first for me! The vitamins and minerals in the tea, I believe, have contributed to it.

God Bless and Thank you so much!

    Great for Women
    by Donna J. on Aug 24, 2009

Hi, my friend gave me Red Raspberry leaf tea because I was having a lot of issues with my pregnancy. I was having a lot of pains. Within days of me drinking 2 pots a day, my pains lessened dramatically. I still had issues, and was on light duty with my pregnancy, but it made such a difference. I drank while in labor, and had the best delivery out of my 3. I gave some to my neighbor and she’s been buying it because she noticed a big difference with her monthly cycle. Thank you, so much.

    Helps with Delivery
by Jill on Aug 24, 2009

My first labor was 10 hours long and I pushed for 2 hours and did it all natural. It was very painful for several hours towards the end. My sister-in-law had an 8 hour labor with one of her children but said it was not that bad. I thought "How could that possibly be?" She said she had drunk Red Raspberry Leaf tea throughout the pregnancy. So I gave it a shot with my next pregnancy.

I drank it from the second trimester all the way to the end, at least two cups a day. My labor was INCREDIBLE. I delivered at home (as with my first). I had two midwives who were partners. One of them didn't even make it! My labor was only 2 hours long and I pushed ONE time! I am expecting my third and am about to purchase more of this woman's wonder herb! Lord willing, the next labor will go as smoothly as the last!

    Pain free with red raspberry
by Brandy on Mar 19, 2009

Red Raspberry Leaf is amazing. After a friend's recommendation and reading about it on your website I started keeping a gallon of Red Raspberry Leaf tea in my refrigerator, and drank it constantly. I added Peppermint or Spearmint for flavor, and soon added in Siberian Ginseng (for the unique stresses of my husband being deployed to Iraq), and Passion Flower (for insomnia and to help prevent a second experience with toxemia). Low energy and a poor immune system has plagued me for years, but despite being a very stressful time, I felt energetic and stayed remarkably healthy for the "home stretch" of my pregnancy . With my first delivery my blood pressure was at stroke levels, lasted 24hrs, and I narrowly avoided a Cesarean. My second delivery was only about six hours long, was far easier than I ever thought childbirth could be, and this time around my blood pressure was only slightly elevated after the baby was safely born. My post-partum bleeding was light and lasted less than two weeks (it was at least twice that long after my first delivery). I've continued to drink this tea pretty regularly and just had my first cycle. That was the lightest, shortest cycle I've had since I was a very young teenager, and it was the very first cycle I've ever had that was totally pain free! I'm thoroughly impressed, and eager to share this herb with everyone I can.

I've ordered from you before and have always received my order in a timely manner. The teas have been very tasty. I will be trying the Vinegar of the Four Thieves this spring. I have it all mixed up and ready to go. Thank you so much for all the information you include on your web site. I've been able to start using herbs right away. I received The How to Herb Book now so will be able to do even more. Thank you very much.
