Excerpts from Herbal Antibiotics

Though the Wormwood herb root is rarely used for medicine, it is extremely powerful, especially for hot, sore infections of the throat and lungs. Some herbalists do not recommend the use of this herb because of its thujone content. Millennia of traditional use support its continued place in the herbal dispensatory.

Wormwood Herb is excellent to expel intestinal worms, stimulate the appetite and liver, and also the uterus. Two of its phytochemicals stimulate digestion. Compresses soaked in wormwood tea are recommended for irritations, bruises, and sprains.

A word of warning

  • Avoid using it internally during pregnancy.
  • Wormwood herb is a very potent. Use caution when taking it internally.
  • Some people have sensitivities to Wormwood. If you experience any negative symptoms, stop taking immediately.

Topical OK during pregnancy?
by Anonymous on May 12, 2013

Is topical use of this OK during pregnancy? I see it is in the Vinegar of Thieves, which is useful as a bug spray. I know internally it is not OK to use when pregnant, but, again, what about topically? I just love this store. Thank you so much for having it!

From what I have read, not enough is known about the safety of applying wormwood directly to the skin and may be best to avoid topical use. I would recommend asking your midwife or Dr. before using.

What are the reccomended dosages?
by Scott on May 4, 2013

I've been trying to research what the reccomended dosages are for wormwood and not having much luck. I want to know, how much is too much? Are there any links someone might be able to reccomend? I was thinking about using about a teaspoon (or less?) of it in a baked cake after milling it in a spice mill.

In the The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook by James A. Duke, Ph. D., dosage options are listed as follows: One-quarter to 1/2 teaspoon of a liquid extract daily, 1 teaspoon of the dried herb in a cup of hot water up to three times a day before or after meals, or 10 -20 drops of wormwood tincture stirred into a glass of water three times a day before meals. I would recommend the above mentioned book for dosage options on many different herbs!

This is an amazing herb for its vermifuge, anti-bacterial, sedative, dymennorhea calming, and digestive tonic properties. In clinical trails, it even shows promise for Crohn's disease. This is the flavoring used in absinthe liquor.

However, it is a powerful herb and must be used according to recommended dosages. It contains a toxic chemical called Thujone, and should not be used for longer than 4 weeks unless under doctor supervision. Must never be used by children, pregnant women, and those with kidney or liver disease.
