Oatgrass, or oatstraw as it is popularly known, is the young shoots of the grain plant, Avena sativa. The seeds of the oat plant can be sprouted like alfalfa, and eaten as a rich source of minerals, particularly Calcium.

Oatstraw is an excellent source of both calcium and magnesium. These body-building nutrients may assist in strengthening hair, nails, bones and teeth, and help support a healthy nervous system.

Oatgrass, or oatstraw as it is popularly known, is the young shoots of the grain plant Avena sativa. Much has been written about the seed of this plant and especially about the effect of oat bran on serum cholesterol. To herbalists, however, oatmeal is for breakfast while oatgrass tea is for dinner. The young shoots of the oat plant can be sprouted like alfalfa and eaten as a rich source of minerals. The shoots and even the straw remaining after the grain has been harvested are excellent sources of the major minerals used in the structure of the body including magnesium and calcium.

A tea or extract of this herbal product is the most effective way of obtaining its virtues. The dried plant material is too fibrous to be eaten directly. Oatgrass tea is said to relieve hysteria and balance the menstrual cycle of females.

Little is known about the chemistry of oatgrass. We performed a nutritional analysis on it for this work but little else is available. It ranks as the best terrestrial source of magnesium in our study. Magnesium deficiency has been linked to menstrual disorders, irritability and poor calcium absorption. This may contribute to its folk uses.

Contains mucilaginous compounds as well as crude fiber that encourage normal bowel function. These compounds reduce bowel transit time, absorb toxins and enhance the efficiency of digestion. Oatstraw is an excellent herbal source of magnesium.

From Our Reading and/or Experience...

  • As a powder, we use Oatstraw in tincture combinations and capsules. Of course, it can be used in many other types of remedies. Except as a tea, as powders are not normally used in tea combinations.
  • It can be used to benefit anyone: men, women (including before, during or after pregnancy, and nursing), children and animals.
  • It can be used as often as you would like, and in any way you choose.
  • As is the case with most herbs, Oatstraw should be stored in a dark, dry, and cool place.

    WHAT YOU'LL NEED

    Horsetail/Shavegrass powder should be taken two weeks on, two weeks off, and repeat. It is not recommended during pregnancy.


    HOW TO MAKE IT...

    1. Combine the first 4 herbs until thoroughly mixed, and add 1-2 tablespoons to your daily smoothie or juice.
    2. I recommend encapsulating the Kelp powder and taking 1-3 capsules a day.

    Healthy Hair Smoothie


    WHAT YOU'LL NEED

    • 1-2 tablespoons Rapunzel Hair Mix
    • 2 cups organic frozen berries
    • 1 frozen banana
    • 2 cups coconut milk
    • 1/2 teaspoon Celtic Sea Salt
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla

    HOW TO MAKE IT...

    Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth, and enjoy! Another fun thing to do is to freeze your smoothie in a plastic cup, and make popsicles. You can buy popsicle molds or just fill a small plastic cup with your favorite juice or smoothie, insert a spoon, freeze and voila! You have a healthy popsicle that can be made ahead of time, ready in the freezer for any hot summer day!


  • Nutrient Rich Smoothies!

    Make your own Herba-Smoothie-Mix with these nutrient rich herbs to use in your breakfast smoothie for a strong start to your day!


    WHAT YOU'LL NEED

    1/2 pound of each, all powdered herbs:


    HOW TO MAKE IT...

    1. Mix all six herbs together by putting them in a 1.5 gallon zip-lock bag and shake. Let sit for 10 minutes, then pour it into a clean glass jar and cover with a lid.
    2. Keep in the cabinet, out of sun, moisture, or heat. Makes 3 pounds of Herba-Smoothie-Mix.

    WHAT YOU'LL NEED ~ TO MAKE HERBA-SMOOTHIE

    • 1 rounded teaspoon of Herba-Smoothie-Mix
    • 1 cup frozen fruit (my favorite right now is blueberry)
    • 1/2 cup plain yogurt (any brand will work, homemade is best)
    • 2 teaspoons Chia seed
    • 1 cup juice (my favorite is orange or mango)
    • Add honey if you like, but I don’t think it even needs it.

    HOW TO MAKE IT...

    1. Place all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth. Serve and enjoy!
